BIG CHANGES TO PLAYER REGISTRATION MANDATED BY US SOCCER
To Our San Ramon FC Families:
Recently, the United States Soccer Federation (U.S. Soccer) communicated information regarding changes to the registration matrix for youth soccer in our country that contradicts the original age group classifications U.S. Soccer originally provided in August 2015.
As a reminder, the initiatives announced by U.S. Soccer revolve around a change to player registration age groups that focus on the players birth year rather than the scholastic calendar (Aug. 1 to July 31) that currently defines the registration matrix, and a new standardized Small-Sided Games format for players in the Under-6 to Under-12 age groups.
Both initiatives will be mandated throughout Northern California beginning with the spring season of 2016 for players born 2003 or later, and with those born in 2002 or earlier following suit after the 2015-2016 State Cup competition concludes in the spring of 2016.
It is important to note that all youth soccer clubs in the United States will abide by the new format no later than the fall of 2017, and ALL Northern California clubs will adhere to the changes beginning with player assessments for our competitive program in 2016.
While NorCal Premier Soccer verified the original message and age matrix rollout with U.S. Soccer before release, U.S. Soccer subsequently made additional changes, which were not communicated clearly, affecting the classification of certain age groups.
We have worked with NorCal Premier, Cal-North, US Club Soccer, and U.S. Soccer to clarify the confusion.
Players born in 2008 will be classified as the new U9 players, those born in 2007 will be classified as the new U10 players, 2006 born players will be the new U11s, and so on down the line in order.
While this is different than what was originally presented by U.S. Soccer, it is important to note that players at all clubs in our state will be playing with kids born in the same calendar year as part of the new age group changes.
Our soccer families need to redefine their definition of the “U” classification as it currently stands and simply focus on the details of the birth year age groups as outlined by U.S. Soccer.
While U.S. Soccer is not mandating changes until the start of the 2017 season, our primary playing leagues, NorCal Premier and Cal-North Soccer, are both moving towards the implementation of the birth year and small-sided changes for the 2016 season.
This information is being communicated to help guide you through the changes and answer any questions you may have.
San Ramon FC is reviewing all rosters, player birth years, player positions and depth charts prior to the implementation of these changes so we can quickly adapt and communicate any roster and/or coaching assignments as needed for 2016. Click here to view our birth year chart for player age groups.
We will examine the best options for our players at San Ramon FC and continue to do what is in the best interest of each player’s overall development.
