A look at what high school age students should do in April

April 20, 2020

Seniors – 2020’s At this point all seniors should have received their notices for acceptance, denial, or waitlisted.

Make sure you see what the deadlines are for your deposit to be paid. If you are looking to play soccer or another sport at your school of choice, make sure you have confirmed with the head coach that you have a roster spot.

Juniors – 2021’s College: With the current situation and the 2021 class not being able to take the SAT/ACT until late summer or early fall, there have been many colleges who have already announced they will make 2021 graduates applications test-optional. Test optional means you should still submit scores to support your application if you have them. You may also apply without them. Both the ACT and SAT boards have announced that they will have an online testing solution in place by the fall. Many of the high school districts will be moving to a pass/fail grading system for the second semester. This will lock in your cumulative GPA through the first semester. Do not worry, the college will adjust to this and it should not affect your college applications. Just make sure you do not fail any classes! Know where you stand with your teachers.

AP Testing – College Board online: May 4-8 and May 11-15 – Register below: https://apcentral.collegeboard.org/courses/exam-dates-and-fees

Recruiting: College coaches are home and working on their recruiting. Current juniors should be working on their college lists and starting to contact coaches if they have not already. College Fit Finder (CFF) profiles should be updated and used as your main resume page. In addition to this, you should have an updated copy of your transcript through the first semester to add to your resume and test scores if you have them. A one document PDF file that includes resume, transcript, and test scores will impress the coaches with what they need to evaluate you as a student. VIDEO has become even more important than ever with no live soccer being played at this time. See the links below to videos to help with creating your CFF resume page.

Sophomores – 2022’s College: It’s never too early to start your college search. There are many factors that go into each individual family’s needs and wishes. If you would like a personal and detailed starting point for your family, please contact me at gwhitehouse@sanramonfc.com to schedule a brief 15-30 minute phone call to discuss.

Recruiting: The college recruiting process should begin sometime during your sophomore year.

With the new recruiting regulations put into place as of May 2019, college coaches may not talk directly to you, parents, or any resources like coaches until June 15th of your sophomore year of high school. You may start reaching out to coaches at any time but all they may reply with before this date are camp invites, links to school information, and asking you to complete athletic questionnaires.

Freshman – 2023’s College and Recruiting: This is a great time to contact Gary Whitehouse and have an initial free 30-minute consultation. You can also follow the sophomore guidelines above.

I look forward to being able to assist you with questions or to meet you virtually!
