As of 1 pm on 11/4/21, the grass fields are still open. Yesterday, the city of San Ramon communicated with staff at San Ramon FC that grass fields re-opened. SRFC will accept this communication as a fact that grass fields are open still today and practices can be held as scheduled.
Teams in the recreational and competitive programs can hold practices on grass fields on Thursday, November 4.
The fields are expected to remain open until further notice from the city of San Ramon.
While we are grateful for the much-needed rain, it does raise questions about soccer activities on grass fields. Generally speaking, when it rains, San Ramon FC will continue to hold soccer practices while the grass fields remain open.
All-weather turf fields at Tiffany Roberts Field and Rancho San Ramon Community Park do not close due to rainy weather so practices are held rain or shine.
Ultimately, parents decide what is best for their child and may keep their child at home from practice. If that is your decision, please notify your child’s coach so the coach is informed.
Field Status Details
The city of San Ramon decides if grass fields stay open or get closed due to rain or other weather or environmental concerns (i.e. smoke or extreme heat).
San Ramon FC has no jurisdiction over field status decisions.
The city of San Ramon can make daily decisions on field status according to their established timeline:
The city sends an alert via text or email when communicating its decision. If no alert is sent by the city, then nothing has changed in terms of grass field status.
Anyone can sign up to receive alert notifications on fields from the City of San Ramon. Families are encouraged to do so for their own knowledge and convenience.
Click here to sign up for the city of San Ramon’s public alert system.
IMPORTANT: The most recent city notification on field status will remain in effect until a new notification is sent by the city of San Ramon.
For example: On Friday at 2 pm, the city sends an alert stating all grass fields are closed. If the city does NOT send a new alert at 8 am on Saturday to declare grass fields are open, then grass fields are still closed (the 2 pm Friday alert being the most recent notification).
Club Communications on Status of Soccer Practice & Games
Once the city has issued an alert closing or opening grass fields, San Ramon FC will send email communication to the recreational coaches, competitive coaches, and team managers, shortly after receiving the city’s grass field status notification.
If the city does not send a scheduled alert, San Ramon FC will send a communication to reiterate that the field status of the previous alert is still in effect.
In the below example, San Ramon FC would send an email communication, stating that fields are still closed, by 8:15 am to recreational coaches, competitive coaches, and team managers.
Example: On Friday at 2 pm, the city sends an alert stating all grass fields are closed. If the city does NOT send a new alert at 8 am on Saturday to declare grass fields are open, then grass fields are still closed (the 2 pm Friday alert being the most recent notification).
Bottom line: If the city closes the grass fields, San Ramon FC cancels practices and games on grass fields until the city re-opens the grass fields. San Ramon FC will not cancel games and practices on all-weather turf fields due to rainy weather unless there is a threat of lightning.
FAQ: What should I do if my team has a game at 8 am on the weekend?
Admittedly, this is challenging. The best thing to do is assume that the game is to be played until you receive the alert notification from the city of San Ramon or a club communication from San Ramon FC.
That said, while not guaranteed, the city may send weekend alerts earlier than 8 am to inform families and organizations in this situation.
FAQ: Are Canceled Practices Rescheduled?
Due to limited field availability, all canceled practices on grass fields are not rescheduled.
FAQ: Are games rescheduled if canceled due to weather?
San Ramon FC will make every attempt to reschedule games canceled by the weather but ultimately may be unable to do so if fields are unavailable.
